I don't understand why you call Haydn's decision to write a concerto "unusual" --- he wrote many concerti, and several of them were for keyboard and orchestra. --- I can't argue with your review of the Beethoven except to confess my surprise: how could the venerable Cleveland Orchestra perform in a less than stellar manner when playing Beethoven's 8th (which they have recorded more than once)? I hope that your aesthetic sense was momentarily off and that the orchestra was its customary brilliant self.
